Product quality is mainly shaped in the technological process. In order to maintain it during storage, transport and sale, it is necessary to use packaging adapted to the properties of the packaged product and meeting sanitary and commercial requirements.
The scope of testing of materials and products intended for contact with food includes, among others:
microbiological contamination testing;
organoleptic evaluation for the appearance and durability of the print;
sensory analysis for the transfer of foreign taste and odour from packaging to food;
physico-chemical and mechanical tests (e.g. leak tightness, chemical resistance);
determination of heavy metal content;
global and specific migration.
The simulants used in the global and specific migration tests, as well as the time and temperature conditions, are selected according to the requirements of standardisation documents and legislation, depending on the intended use of the packaging, e.g. for hydrated foodstuffs, high fat content, low pH, for single or multiple use, etc.
