Risk analyses of water intakes

The purpose of the risk analysis of water intakes is to identify possible threats that may adversely affect the intake waters, including causing water pollution, and to determine the current state of the groundwater environment within the reach of the water intake inflow zone.

The Water Law Act of 20 July 2017, as amended, reinstated the obligation to establish protection zones for water intakes.

The owner of a water intake carrying out tasks in the field of collective water supply (waterworks, municipalities, industrial plants, owners of intakes) is obliged to carry out a risk analysis and submit it to the relevant provincial governor.

A risk analysis is carried out for:

  • Water intakes supplying more than 10 m3 per day or serving more than 50 people;
  • Water intakes supplying more than 10 m3 of water per day or serving more than 50 people, where the water is supplied for human consumption, in the context of commercial, industrial service activities or to public buildings.

The risk analysis shall be updated at least every 10 years and, for water intakes supplying less than 1,000 m3 of water per year, at least every 20 years.

The obligation to prepare an intake risk analysis should be fulfilled by the end of December 2022 by the owner of the intake. Due to continuous demand, we also prepare intake risk analyses for our clients after the indicated deadline.
